Our History
502 Main Street
The seed that was to become the Saskatoon Unitarians was planted in 1956, when people of like minds came together to form the first Unitarian Fellowship in Saskatchewan. Initially, the group met in private homes, but they became much more visible to the community in 1964, when they moved into this building on Main Street.
The building on Main became a centre for social activist groups and a gathering place for local youth, as well as hosting a daycare, dance and yoga classes. We outgrew this charming space in the mid 90’s and rented for a few years until purchasing our next home in 1998.
912 Idylwyld Drive
Here we grew in numbers and in consciousness. In 2000, we formally did the work to educate ourselves on what it means to actively welcome individuals with varied sexual orientations and gender identities. Our children and youth had room to grow and thrive here. We implemented the Our Whole Lives program, a lifespan sexuality education curriculum for kindergarten to adults.
213 Second Street East
Since 2005, we have made our home in the Buena Vista neighbourhood, in what was previously Second Street United Church. We replaced the pews with comfy chairs that allow flexible use of the sanctuary and created permaculture and wildflower gardens, as we strive to be a “Green Sanctuary.” We started learning about Truth and Reconciliation and how we can decolonize our faith, later broadening into an exploration of anti-racism.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, we acquired the equipment and skills needed to offer our services, meetings, and other activities online. Currently almost all we do includes a Zoom option for participation, enabling those who can’t attend in person, whether for reasons of health, geography, or transportation, to be part of our community.
